Do I Have to Take a Class?
Hanging out with two of my best tools for one-on-one prenatal education: teaching doll “Ivy” and my model pelvis.
Short answer: No! But of course, that’s not the whole story.
As a doula, I believe strongly in your ability to choose the plan and preparation that you decide is right for you. But I also believe in giving you the info, so your choices are informed ones.
Here’s what that info says:
Prenatal classes might improve your birth experience—and even your outcomes.
A 2024 study published by Britain’s National Institutes of Health, found that “prenatal education had significant clinical benefits for pregnant women, reducing birth fear, depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms, and increasing childbirth self-efficacy.” Another, published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, showed that “Participating in childbirth classes could reduce the rates of adverse delivery outcomes.”
And while I don’t have the stats of a scientific journal, as a doula I’ve seen first-hand that parents who take the time to educate themselves feel more confident in labour, birth and after.
“Does it have to be a class? Can I learn another way?”
You can! Podcasts, articles and books can all be helpful—but if you’re feeling short on time or attention, a good class might be your best bet.
“But I’ve got a doula!”
That’s great! But there’s so much to know about labour, birth and what to expect as new parents, that two prenatal visits are unlikely to cover it all.
Which is why I recommend my clients consider attending a class.
Not all classes are created equal!
These days, parents have a menu of choices from free to pricey, those that take an afternoon vs. those that take several weeks, and from classes that are online and anonymous to group classes with other parents. Some classes cover only childbirth preparation, and others encompass—or focus on—newborn care.
And for those willing to learn in person, here’s a wonderful side benefit: classes can be a great place to meet other parents who are due at the same time as you!
